Thanks Obama!

It took 5 months, but look what came in the mail yesterday!

At least no matter what happens in November, Daniel will know that Obama was president when he was born...and we made sure we have his Hawaiian birth certificate, just in case he decides to run for president some day.

Apple of our eye

Each week in daycare, there is a theme of some kind that the kids "learn" about.  Last week was leaves, this week is apples.

Yesterday Liana had Daniel "participate" in the craft and sent it home with us.

Beyond anything, I'm just so impressed that Liana made the effort to clearly make an entire apple and then paint his foot and do the footprint.  Especially keeping in mind she has 5 other kiddos that she's working with!

I feel a little silly for how much I love it, especially given that it was made by an adult haha.  Immediately my reaction was "I'm never throwing it away!"  And then I realized that this is how it starts...

Either way, I love it.  Now if only I could convince Danny this isn't the type of apple that you eat...

[No] More Peas Please!

What is this mysterious green mush?

And why is Dad laughing at me?

Bleh, I knew I didn't like green stuff.

Mama is trying to convince me it's tasty...should I trust her?

Fine, I'll give it another shot..

Definitely don't think I like this stuff..

I was right, definitely do NOT like this green gunk.

Maybe if I control the spoon it'll taste better.

So far, still not convinced..

What the heck is this stuff?  Definitely not ice cream!

I'm simply not impressed with the preparation of these peas.

This spoon is pretty good though..once I fling all the green goo all over the place.

Yeah, definitely better when the goo is everywhere but the inside of my mouth.

Aw man, what's a guy gotta do to get a donut around here?

Breakfast date

Parent teacher conferences today and tomorrow mean a late start for us.  Yahoo!  We had breakfast at a little cafe in Makawao this morning.

Tom's face is out of focus in this photo, but I just love how comfortable and at peace Daniel looks.

A late start does not mean a sleep in.  We were up at 5, but it was nice not to have to rush out the door.

Saturday Morning Hike

We wanted to take our fancy hiking backpack for a test drive this morning.  We talked for about an hour in the woods, it was great!

Danny approves of his new method of transportation!

Part way through the hike, and he still likes it!  There's so much to look at.

The sun beams were gorgeous...streaming through the trees.

Family selfie #1.

Family selfie #2.

Danny and Dad trying to figure out how they can climb up to the top...

And finally, riding in a backpack for an hour is exhausting!  With about 5 minutes to go in our hike, Daniel was having trouble keeping his head up anymore.  So we took him out of the pack and he passed out.

All in all, a great morning walk!  We're hoping to use this carrier more and more as Danny gets older.

Overheard in the Schad House..

When discussing literary Halloween costume ideas...

Tom:  We need to think off the beaten path a bit.
Molly:  mhmm..
Tom:  Like he could be Captain Ahab and you could be the white whale.
Molly: ...
Tom:  Oh shoot, oh shoot.  Don't go telling Maggie or anyone...

And clearly the first thing I did was come document it on the blog...

Getting closer

We've been practicing sitting up and we're getting closer and closer!  We've got the tripod for now.  Sometimes he can sit up for real for a few seconds before tumbling over.

Also is it just me, or does he look like he's up to no good in this picture?!

Sweet Taters

Mmmm...sweet potatoes are really good for spreading all over your face, shirt, and chair!

He's a poi boy!

Big news!  This [not so] little boy tried "solid" food for the first time tonight!  We went Hawaiian style and started with poi.  Poi is mashed taro root and is a common first food on the islands.  We mixed the poi with a little breastmilk and away we went!

I don't actually like poi very much.  This was confirmed tonight when I tried it again.

Danny, on the other hand, thought it was great!  He didn't seem to think that eating solid food was a big deal and acted like we should have been doing this for a long time.  He seems to be saying "What's taking ya so long!?  Refill that spoon!"

Though he didn't make any faces that seemed to say "gross" or "yuck," Tom managed to capture a pretty classic picture.

At points it was unclear if he was most interested in the spoon or the food (the answer was spoon), but he actually ate pretty much everything we gave him.  Other than what ended up on his face, hands, bib, and tray of course.

But truthfully, he didn't spit anything out.  So poi is a win!  He also had a clear do-it-myself attitude and wanted to hold the spoon at all times.  Likely cause that way he could control chewing on it.

We'll try sweet taters later this week!

And lastly, a video because, of course, as parents of this generation, we must fully document everything on photo and video.

And now it is most definitely bath time!

Busy Week

After a CRAZY week, we've survived and made it to Saturday.  I had something to keep me at school every night this week, which meant Daniel was there with me.  I'm so fortunate to have great friends and co-workers at Seabury who really helped me out.

Yesterday there was no daycare, so Daniel Bean got [had] to come to school with me.  Here he is on the couch, surrounded by pretty girls during MS chorus...

These girls would have been happy for class to have consisted of only playing with the baby, but we had a little work to do.  That didn't stop Daniel from taking a little nap..

Mostly for me, so I can look back on this someday and remember that I survived, here's what our week looked like...

Monday - Labor Day.  No school, but musical rehearsal 9-12.  Not so bad.
Tuesday - School.  Head to Maui Choral Arts rehearsal for musical recruitment.  Home by 8pm.
Wednesday - School.  Musical rehearsal 6:15-8:15.
Thursday - School.  Parent back to school night 6-8.  Luckily got to hang out at Steph and Ryan's with baby Naomi (who is a week older).  They live on campus so it was really convenient.
Friday - School.  No daycare.  Senior Night 3-7.  Thankful my principal let me leave senior night at 7 and he did the rest of the work until it was over around 10pm.

This boy is SO happy to be home today.  You can tell he's at ease and feeling good..and currently napping.  AND Tom will be home in 12 hours!!

The man in the screen is headed home!

Here's a post from Dad.  I must ask,  what did people do before the days of Skype and google chat?  I've been staying up on Sacramento Peak (Elevation 9200 ft) in New Mexico for the last week, with little to no phone signal.  Yet, I was able to see these two crazies every day.

Danny doesn't quite understand the video chat thing yet.  If I had it my way, he wouldn't have to, but in this day in age, I am sure thankful it exists!

I get to head back to these beauties today, and hope to assure Danny that I am not just a two-dimensional voice from the sky.  Plus, Dad has a lot of roll-over catch up to do!

Roll Over, Roll Over!

A couple of weeks ago, Danny figured out how to roll from his belly to his back.  That one night he did it numerous times.  Since then he's only done it once or twice.

Tonight he figured out how to roll from his back to his belly!

Again, he did it many times in a row.  So much so that I couldn't lie him on his back without him rolling.  I'll be interested to see if he remembers how to do it tomorrow :-).

Either way, it's a whole different ball game now.  He'll no longer stay put where I set him down...uh oh.

Who took my little newborn and traded him out for his big kid!?

Please come home, Dad!

After carefully planning to take my shower after Danny was asleep in bed, we had quite a shower saga last night.  8:30pm, I've got conditioner in my hair and I hear screaming/crying.  Not the normal fuss/kicking legs...but the very, very rare screaming/crying.  Outside of getting shots, he's maybe cried like that once or twice before.  So, you can imagine how that played out.  It involved a soaking, dripping wet Mama trying to calm Daniel while the shower was still running in the bathroom.

Well it turns out that was just the beginning of quite a night...We were up at 12, 2, 3, 4, 5:30, and 6:15.  Most times to nurse, but sometimes just to cough and fuss a bit.  I don't know if he's coming down with a cold or if he's just discovered that coughing is another noise he can make.  Between blowing raspberries, playing with his feet (two toys that he always has with him!!), missing Dad, and now the coughing, there's no need to sleep!

Here we are this morning...not looking sleepy at all...

Here's hoping he gets a little nap in before we have to leave for a 3 hour musical rehearsal on this Labor Day.

Hurricane Friday

Waiting for Mama and Dad to finish getting ready for school/work..

Hanging out with Mama at school.  We had an early dismissal today due to the impending hurricane.  I only had one half hour class to teach because of our weird hurricane schedule.  So Danny spent the day with me.

Enjoying some bonus time at home.
